{ ch-ch-ch-changes }

i mentioned HERE that i'd recently made some changes to my apartment. nothing major ~ simply subtle adjustments here and there. like i've intimated before, it's always evolving! to follow is a before & after comparison of my living room area. what do you think: better, worse or same old same old?!

Love how you've changed the look completely with a little twitting.

it looked so luxurious before!!!! Now it is not as interesting and the green throws off the black/white/gold it had going on before. If you want plants in your home try the kitchen.

I liked the before so much more! So much more your style as well! The after is a bit bland.. so not Kelly!

Hmm...I like the one before a bit more, but I see why you'd want something new. It has a good base, but try adding some more decór to spice it up!

I'm gonna vote for after. I think the splashes of green freshen up the space and break up the black, white, gold colour thread nicely.
It's so fun to change up the pad!

Ah you are putting the winter away. I get your point about the gold, the same thing with me. These gold objects look fabulous in the dark winter months, but when it turns spring , you just want to put them away. The same thing with the carpet, the white stars remind you of snow. Plants are always updating your house and gives it a fresh look. The green really makes you longing for spring, so good choice. But where is that gorgeous ottoman from the Barcelona chair. Don’t put it too far away!!!! The glass vases and accessories defiantly gives you are brighter and clearer feeling.

I prefer your 'before' carpet. Love the new spotted drape on the couch. Does not the old carpet work with the spotted couch drape? The reindeer perhaps on the other side of the Ever After print. Perhaps switch the plants, the bigger one from this vantage point seems to overpower the other objects on your coffee table. It might look nice dripping over the edge of the side table. Change is great, I prefer both your before and after for different reasons. It is almost as if I cannot compare them, for they each have their unique charm and beauty.

Really beautiful; where did you find the ever after print? I love that even though you use neutral colours, the apartment still seems warm xx

ClosetConfections said...

Both looks are fab, but I personally prefer the "Before". I understand the draw towards greenery to usher in spring, but I guess I'm just not a plant person, lol. However, I could see calla lillies or white orchids working in this space. The leaves and stems would provide a touch of green and would fit right in with the sophisticated lines of your existing decor.

Even without the comparison, I thought it looked a little frantic before. There were too many sharp edges, metallic verticals, and busy designs. I love the switch-up! It looks relaxing and the plants give the room a natural element that grounds it. I'd love to see another non-metallic element, like a sculptural piece of wood somewhere (even stained black), like a stool, perhaps.

Steph G said...

Both versions are lovely and sophisticated. The overall effect of the changes, at least in these photos, is that the room feels slightly warmer and a bit more open and relaxed. The environment becomes more about the space now and the interesting relationships between the objects within the space. There's a subtle shift to a more peaceful mood. I love the way the organic plant forms echo the shapes of the new floor covering and couch throw. With the anticipation of Spring, the plants and the slightly pared down environment really seem to make sense. It's more tranquil, but still very glamorous.

Everyone else who has commented seems to share my sentiments — both are amazing, but i do love how open and bright the after photo is. Castle Fashion mentioned that is seems more homey and livable, and I'd have to agree!

When you rearrange and change, what do you do with some of the items that don't make the cut? Do you move them to other parts of the apartment, put in storage, or donate/sell?

Personally, I like after because the plants put some life into the room and the green adds a bit of dimension to the monochromatic shtick. Plants always make a place look lived in and alive, because at the very least, someone has to be there to water...

So it depends what you want out of your place: perfect, matchy and sort of haute austerity, or well decorated, personal and cared for?

I like the first one better. I like the idea of plants in a living room, but something about the green throws everything else off. I would suggest white or light pink orchids set in a bunch of three and but in a white or black container/planter. That will soften up the room a bit but still look quite elegant.

I'm with everyone who prefers the before photo, with the exception of: the new rug (love it), the fur on your chair in the foreground, the blanket on your couch, and the removal of the overhead lamp. The before shot is so much more natural and interesting to me. It is more eccentric while the after is more strategic and lacks it's previous charm. I dislike the plants. They are just too green for that elegant, neutral room and throw it off for me. Just my two cents though they are both nice options!

Mitra Mansour said...

As an Architect and an interior designer, I have to say that you definitely did well styling your place the first round, but I think the after is so much more sophisticated and stream-lined. The addition of greenery is a nice touch to the black/white/gold palette (adds life to it). It was too busy before and your unique pieces didn't stand out as much. Editing is always a great idea and you can have glamour without going over the top (Mies Van der Rohe did say "less is more").
Nice work, my friend!

Hello Kelly,

I share your passion for brass and gold trinkets...I think executed in the right way can look very expensive and not at all tacky. Too many people are scared to include this in their interior for this very reason. Please keep uploading photos of changes improvements you make,,,,I think you have a ver large and admiring audience! x

i like both for different occasions/seasons/variety.

i appreciate the simplifying that's taking place, but the first had more VERTICAL elements, which i think are necessary when all the furniture sits low and the architecture reinforces it.

i really loved how that single, burnished gold candle stand broke the architectural horizon line. the brass tones are especially warm and pleasing in winter.

you have a wonderful opportunity to introduce and trade out various accent colors (brass, green..?). and those items could take focus in an exciting way.

or you could do a majority of white for spring.. always fresh.

the before felt complete in it's statement, and the after is quite nearly there? i think the coffee table wants more of a moment.

always an inspiration, and food for creative thought, thanks!

Floral/greenery arrangements always make a space seem more inviting and alive. And certainly a nice touch considering It'll be Spring tomorrow for you.

The black cowhide rug is much subtler than the starburst rug. This means the visual emphasis is more on your lovely decorations instead. Also the cowhide has a smoother texture and looks less "woolly" and much more Spring.

Enjoy the beginning of Spring in your fresh Spring space.

I love your interior decoration photos. I always find them inspirational. Please keep them coming.

Hi, I've just discovered your blog and can't get over how similar our taste is. I see how your before was a tad more cluttered than it is now - so in that respect it is better, but the black rug is, for me, a little too stark.
