{ evolutionary }

I've featured pieces from Primary before, but I'm extra-specially excited to show you my friend Cleo Schroeder's latest collection, and the look book we shot together for it! I think she's evolved the line really well over the past couple seasons, and today it reflects exactly what she's always aimed to achieve: the perfect assemblage of wear-everywhere clothes that are anything but basic:

{ signature } style

back in september, i had occasion to style LL Bean Signature's spring 2012 look book. it was an exciting opportunity for me, as i grew up with an ardent LL Bean-loving father, and am thus well-versed in the brand's heritage. since the recently-introduced Signature collection is an outlet for the company to speak to a younger, more fashion-informed audience than ever before, it seemed like a dream gig to me: a chance to blend the past with the present.

what i didn't anticipate was the amazing creative bond i quickly formed with the Signature team. they're quite an inspiring set of people, poised to go big with this new brand, an optimistic answer to the great tradition of american sportswear. i loved working with them so much that i found myself on a plane to puerto rico a week later to continue the momentum ~ but that's a story for another day. for now, i wanted to give you a closer look at our first shoot together. i'll show you more from this collaboration as the pieces become available online!!

{ some } velvet morning

i've long felt lucky to be building a life out of endeavors that excite my imagination, and to collaborate with an ever-changing cast of conspirators ~ each of whom teaches me something unique. but i've never been happier than i was when abandoned in a grandiose beach house with jamie and kevin and a trove of cool clothes. we established a quick camaraderie over two favorite things: working hard and telling stories in images. from there, we immediately, giddily glided down the same rabbit hole: we ate and dressed and dreamed and drank and talked and planned and shot and laughed and lived together. together, we felt we could make something special.

visually, we wanted to go somewhere new, to whisper our shared secrets to you. things can get a little strange out in california; all that lingering light plays tricks on life. pods of dolphins slip into sight; birds sing, unseen. the shackles are gilded and the cages palatial. yet the colors are lovely, and there's always the promise of escape on the PCH...

{ malibu } dreamin

for five days in malibu, i lived in a dream. i found myself in a dream house, in a dream world, working with the caliber of collaborators i'd always dreamed i'd meet. we had free reign of an aesthetic surreality, to play dress up and make as many pictures as we pleased. we basked in the sun, we binged on bluesy tunes, we supped on champagne and we revisited the videos that inundated our adolescences. we swung on the swings and spun our feet in the sea. we got so unbelievably inspired, in love with the moment. here begins the series of work that ensued:
