{ interpreting inspiration }

this morning, i had an exciting appointment with fred allard, the dashing creative director of nine west. after previewing their fabulous fall line (more on that to come!), i finagled my way into his team's trend room ~ where walls are covered floor to ceiling in inspiration, and box after box is filled to the brim with vintage belts, hats, prints, clutches, shoe lasts, bits of antique beading, and other assorted day dreameries. entering a room like that is akin to stepping inside the creative mind ~ made three dimensional.

whenever you have multiple people collaborating on any one collection or thing, it is important to create this sort of concrete code to define your direction. a designer like mr. allard travels the world to cull references for his vision; putting them together in one place both metabolizes his message and broadens the visual vocabulary of his team as a whole.

recently, vogue.com made similar studio visits around new york city in anticipation of fashion week. below are their photos of three different designers' mood boards, followed by images of the resulting collections that i felt best reflected the imagined intentions. in any art, the process is always at least as interesting as the outcome.

mr. de la renta described this season's energy as: "polished and elegant ~ a celebration of modern femininity." more specifically, he's translated art deco references and a cinnamon and pumpkin palette into beautiful beadwork, chic cocktails and indulgent daywear.

for phillip lim, "fall is the tension between disco and punk, a classic wardrobe worn by a girl who would cut her dress." with shades of debbie harry and halston, this became an incontrovertibly covetable collection.

the designers of rag & bone looked to "england in all its colonial glory, in contrast with the people of the himalayas." this collection brilliantly illustrates how a little styling can go a long way toward evoking an inspiration, so that the clothes themselves don't get too costumey.

{ nyfw } favorite daywear

perusing the new york shows, i'm tickled taupe by a strong seventies trend ~ an elegant elan has finally edged the eighties off the runway! i'm loving ruddy colors for fall, suede boots with all, and an emphatic insistence that statement necklaces and syrupy sunnies are still the accessories du jour (i couldn't agree more)!

{ costume of the day } snowshoe shuffle

yesterday, racked ran this photo of me leaving last thursday's bess show. this was at the height of snowpocalypse 2010 ~ meaning the air was frigid and the streets were a combination of ice and slush. this weather should NEVER be forced upon fashion week attendees; it makes looking cute really, really hard. my sole saving grace was these new boots ~ it only took five years of living in this city to finally find a pair of snow shoes with a partial heel! victory at last!!!

{ the owl that calls upon the night }

ah, fashion week... an incessant stream of long days and late nights. to all who have asked, i'll not launch a new glamporium collection this week, but there are still lots of lovelies in store, so please have a look!

{ nyfw } first loves

my wardrobe has always relied heavily on a squadron of knee-length jackets, polka dot prints, and the color navy. thus, i'd love to enlist either of these looks (and especially the sunnies at left) into my arsenal:

{ of angels and demons }

two days ago, i talked about how giddy the beginning of fashion week felt. sadly, that jubilant mood was short-lived. yesterday's tragic, untimely death of alexander mcqueen cast a pall over the proceedings.

odd as it may sound, the news hit me like an ambien. mind in shock, my reaction was entirely physical; i felt immediately depleted ~ all strength sucked dry.

these days, fashion is all commerce. though i don't talk about it much, that's why a traditional design career didn't quite work for me. i quickly tired of churning out the predictable products (no matter how lovely) that stores expected every season. anything genuinely creative was unfailingly declared 'unsaleable'. intellectually, this is understandable, but emotionally ~ to an artistic temperament ~ it can be crushing.

certainly, some designers are able to align their limitless imaginations with retailers' restraints. alber elbaz at lanvin comes to mind ~ he writes poetry with his clothes, and yet women clamber to buy up every piece. unfortunately, the careers of many other talented designers ~ like olivier theyskens ~ have suffered for an inability to master this balance. so often one's vision must be watered-down to be accepted, but alexander mcqueen seemed mightier than this convention.

i shudder to re-read sarah mower's review of his monumental fall 2009 collection: " alexander mcqueen may be the last designer standing who is brave or foolhardy enough to present a collection that is an unadulterated piece of hard and ballsy showmanship."

we have lost someone ~ and something ~ utterly irreplaceable.

{ nyfw } kick-off party

last night i was joined by krystal simpson (straight off a plane and STILL looking insane) to kick-off fashion week ~ valentine style! the festivities commenced at curve, where we fĂȘted the US launch of jovial japanime character pucca. aided by buoyant refrains spun by harley viera newton, plus an abundance of mini-cupcakes and godiva truffles, the crowd was equally animated. everyone seemed so happy that fashion week had begun!

on display were darling designs from a few of my favorite fashion friends:

but we mostly had eyes for the sugar-sweet heart-shaped sunnies (i left with a black pair that i plan to wear all week). viva l'amour & glamour!!
