my younger sister will soon be graduating college and embarking on the job interview process. she recently asked me what three pieces she should buy to ready her wardrobe for that endeavor, and it's a question i've also frequently received from readers. i'll give you all the same advice i gave her. instead of purchasing several items, pool your funds together and get the one thing that will prepare you for anything: helmut lang's wool tuxedo blazer (i'm wearing it in the above image):

jackets are easily my favorite clothing item, and i've bought countless basic black blazers before. but i've never found one that's as radically reinvigorating for your wardrobe as this. its unique, sculpted shape makes it invariably versatile; the raised back works with nearly every silhouette. it can go quite casual, or super-suited. it works with skirts; it works with pants. it'll make whatever dresses you already own instantly interview-appropriate. it'll make a very 'day' ensemble look cocktail-appropriate (and we all know that's when the best networking opportunities arise!). i've even worn mine to black tie affairs. at $575, it's not exactly cheap, but after having seen how useful it's been in my own wardrobe, i'd happily pay double!!
UPDATE: can't afford to invest in the real thing? an eagle-eyed reader tipped me off to this more affordable facsimile!

I agree--paying double for a classic and luxurious item that will last a long time is well worth it. Such a remarkable blazer. x

Great style
like that glittering pants!
This blazer is amazing.
Totally with you on this one - such a great piece is worth an investment and shows some great style and individuality without being over the top for an interview.
If you guys are interested in what to wear for work in somewhat more conservative work environments while still being stylish you might love to have a look over at my own blog where I am discussing just this ;-)
Would love to have your opinions!

How is the sizing for the blazer? I am between a 2 and 4... should I order up?
Thanks-
Courtney
It's beautiful, that's for sure. However, $575 seems WAY out of a college graduate's price range.
I have a blazer exactly like this from H&M, and it´s only 30 $!!
I agree with everyone that this is a great blazer. However, I've got to go with Elizabeth on this one... $575 seems pretty far out of a college student/grad's price range. Also, what about a second interview? They'd need a good second outfit, as well, and I wouldn't recommend wearing the same jacket again. I love the piece and think you're spot on that it is a great investment and very versitile, but definitely not what someone without a job (yet) should buy when preparing for interviews.
Love the way it's cut in the back.

such a great blazer... I have it and wear it all the time

I love the jacket, but it would really depend on what kind of jobs you were applying to. In more conservative fields, like law, it's better to go with a more traditional suit (jacket + skirt for women).
it's always smart to invest in pieces you will wear numerous times rather than dishing out some money here and there on pieces that aren't as useful. It's worth the money!

It is a great jacket indeed, however, it doesn't strike me as a formal interview jacket. I guess it depends on the job as well. But as an attorney, I can assure you that this jacket would be inappropriate for legal job interviews.
I need this asap! ahh!
Generally I prefer longer jackets but this one is really beautiful!

Topshop sells a jacket very similar to your Helmut Lang one and it is only $130.

Definitely a cute (but extremely expensive) jacket, but as the others have mentioned, it would not be appropriate for many more professional fields (like, as someone mentioned, the legal field)
Blazers can either be great or extremely unflattering but this one has just the perfect details and shape! Great piece to have for going off into the real world :)

You're right, it IS perfect. Damn you haha.... I was already dying for that blazer and now I even want it more. Hard for me to justify when it costs more than half a months rent :(
I made a DIY version of a tuxedo blazer for The Fashion Spot! :)

I love all of the Helmut Lang blazers that you wear! I was so inspired that I made my own. Its not quite as nice, but its a bit more affordable. I posted about it on my blog =) http://joeandcheryl.com/?p=1518
Gorgeous!!

They have a blazer in h&m that looks the image of that. I'm sure nowhere near as nice as yours but the h&m one is fab with a great cut to it. I had to get it and you're right, it's great for day to night.

Blazers, of all colours and all shapes, are a absolute must in a wardrobe, especially these day, where blazers are worn with dresses at high fashion event (Love Rachel Bilson for that!)
I've worn one too! Mine is less Toxedo-like, I'll splurge into an Helmut Lang... one day,
I'd like if you looked at my blog and leave me your comments!
Love your blog! It's so inspiring!
