many of you have asked to see the inside of my closet. truth be told, i've been a bit shy to share ~ it's not exactly the walk-in wardrobe of my dreams. in new york, those are few and far between!
at any given time, i have only just enough room to showcase a tightly-edited selection of the current season's clothes. even then, i've had to make clever use of every inch. anything that can't be worn today is in storage in my studio.

in a way, my lack of space is a good thing. it forces me to constantly rotate and reevaluate what's in my closet ~ thus ensuring that everything in there is: (a) truly loved; and (b) immediately wearable. inevitably, i'm sure this saves me tons of time on deciding what to wear.

on the top shelf, i used desk dividers from ikea (intended to separate magazines or office files, they clip to the front of the shelf) to create partitions between handbags and hats. this keeps things from falling into a jumbled mess, and makes it much easier for me to peruse my options everyday:

below that are expandable shoe racks from bed bath & beyond. i was careful to make this shelf tall enough to comfortably accommodate boots when winter rolls around:

to get as many clothes as possible into such a small space, i use real simple slimline hangers. thanks to their genius, built-in hooks, for every one hanger you see on the top pole, 2 or 3 more are linked and tiered below. they are amazing ~ a city girl's savior! they easily triple my potential capacity:

small trinkets, scarves and belts are stored and displayed on a variety of convenient carriers from the container store:

hanging shelves (unseen below, but visible in the 1st pic) are wedged into an awkward, otherwise unusable, inner-closet alcove on the far left. in these, i keep lingerie, gym clothes, pajamas, and extra bedding. on the floor to their right are separate bins for clothes awaiting either dry cleaning or hand washing. next to these, another shoe rack holds everyday errand-running slides and a bin of belts that can't be hung up above:

just outside the closet's double doors, a mannequin wears my current favorite jewels, jacket and vest ~ the better to throw over any ensemble on my way out the door!

finally, i'm working on repurposing the drawers of a nearby dresser to store my extensive collections of statement necklaces and sunnies. i'll post a follow-up when that project is finished!

Hi Kelly,
I love your closet! And what a smart idea to use slimline hangers. I use those wooden hangers, but they indeed take much space in my closet! I think it's time for a summerchange. :-D Thank you so much for showing us your closet. :-D
this looks great! i'm in the middle of organizing my clothing, shoes and accessories so this was perfectly timed for me... i have a similar set up with two shelves at the top of my closet... i love the dividers on top... i think i'm gonna have to borrow that idea... to ikea tomorrow for phase two!
thanks!
Beautiful! I can't wait to see pics of your finished studio & apartment. P.S. I have those Cicada earrings, too!!!

I absolutely love your closet. So organised.:)SarahD
Now I understand why you alway wear different shoes! You have a lots of them! I want your closet :-D
Thanks for the peek into your closet! I'm always looking for new ideas to improve organization. I love your idea for storing your purses with desk dividers; they are some of the most difficult items to figure out how to store.

Your closet is great! I love the fact that everything in there is good to go and in your 'currently wearing' category...(one thing I am useless at is hoarding! ek!)
Do you find it easy to KEEP your closet clean and organised?
I love the mannequin of current fav jewels and the tiered coat hangers sound amazing...how exactly do they work?...that is such a perfect solution!!
Love your apartment posts.
LOVING the way your organized your closet. It's so true - city girls really need to utilize EVERY INCH of space. I use the same hangers and their slimness has doubled the size of available closet space. I need to pick up the ones for skirts/pants, though! And Meredith's comment above is spot on - using the Ikea desk dividers is such a great idea!
Thanks for the peek!

Thanks so much for sharing your closet with us! I just asked for some advice on organizing my closet, and there is lots of inspiration here. I especially like how you store belts and other small items. Having them hanging is a much easier way to assess what's there. I love how you said that clothes should be truly loved and immediately wearable. I got the first one down, the second not so much. So thanks, that's a great mantra to use when cleaning out a closet!
you must be a mind reader or have some sorta mystical powers.
i have been hunting for closet porn for the past couple of weeks...even asked a few bloggers for insight into their closets.
you see, i am in search of organizational advice and inspiration and wanted to see how others organized their respective wardrobes...when like myself, there are many a blouse and one too many pairs of shoes to store away in some eye fetching fashion.

thank you so much, totally stealing these ideas!
So well organized! I'm the worst when it comes to organizing my wardrobe and end up wasting so much time trying to find things. What do you do with your shoeboxes? Do you end up keeping them or tossing?
I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this peek into your very well organized closet. I live in a 1940s home so the closets are teeny. I pretty much take up both in my bedroom leaving hubby with about 5 hangers for shirts.
My mind is spinning with possibilities now. I am definitely going to get those hangers!
Closet porn and what a clever idea to use the IKEA magazine-ends.
http://whatiworetiptotoe.blogspot.com
Love love love your organized closet! Question: Where did you get your mannequin? Great blog!
http://angrylittlechemist.blogspot.com/
Now all you really need are the Joy Mangano hangers to reduce the space even more.
Looking at this closet, I'd say somebody likes prints!
I saw a link to your website at someone's blog and as I see your blog is totally stunning. You're such a beautiful, smart, and stylish girl! I guess I'm gonna read through it (and look at the pictures of course) when I'm back to school on the boring humanity night class. That would be a great use of time:)
And I love the tidy space, too. Unfortunately I share a room with my sister, and we have awfully small closet for two girls. I don't know where to put stuff no more! We used all space but it doesn't look as I'd imagine it... And second I wish I could wear dresses and high heels more often. But here in Chicago (I hate it so much but I like it's suburbs though, like new apartments in Palos Hills or big houses in Mokena), the girls just wear flip flops, sweat pants, shorts, plain and ugly t-shirts with the names of different schools they were attending to or some black hawks or other sox(which I wouldn't wear unless I'd want to look like a 12 year-old girl, I'm skinny and short). And when they go out they try to look like the b*tches with their short tank tops showing cleavage made using push-ups (I'm probably the only one who doesn't wear them here besides the women with huge boobs and men), teased-up hair, "heavy" make-up, extremely short jean skirts, and some b*tchy, ugly high heels. Oh, and I forgot about the orange tan straight from tanning saloon. I see that not all the girls are like that but there aren't many of them. Once I wore some greyish shoes, the high heel was thick and about 2 inches tall, long sweater (but not so long, it almost covers my butt), and skinny jeans. It was fall and those shoes are sling-back. My friend asked me with outraged voice:"Why are you wearing high heels to school"?! I was like: "What? Hey, I'm 20, I think that I'm old enough to look somehow more elegant once a while, dude". She was so surprised that anyone would wear some high heels besides party, wedding, and night in club!
OK, enough of my long comment. I added your blog to my favorite websites.
*its
I wish I had a closet like this!:( mine is only 10% of yours
totally gorgeous, looks like a fashion-masterpiece ;)
Incredible, but true, we have the exact same Kimono... I just stumbled upon your lovely blog today, and to my great surprise, I saw my favorite silk item hanging in your wardrobe!!! Where did you acquire yours? Mine hails from a Chicago suburbs Salvation Army, found completely unused with the red/navy belt still sewn into the pocket-- only $4.00! From the Atlantic Coast of Galicia, Spain, I wish you all the best. un beso!
