{ costume of the day } revisionist history

it's suddenly summery again in new york, so i'm enjoying a mad-cap mix of open-weave hosiery and light colors worn in full, fallish shapes.

this jacket/shift set was a recent find from the what goes around comes around booth at the manhattan vintage clothing show. i'm always a sucker for gold brocade, so there was no question about buying the pair ~ but a little reworking had to be done before i considered the look wearable. click over to luckymag.com to see the before + after (then come back here and let me know what you think)!

wearing: rachel roy earrings, reworked vintage opera jacket + dress, self-designed kenning neckplate + dove grey diamond ring, h+m lace tights, coach boots

Those photos are gorgeous! How do you get them to look like that? Just started to take self photos and it's def not easy.

Anyhow, the clothes are fantastic and you look amazing!

love the transformation. honestly the dress/jacket do not look that old. they definitely have a timeless quality. or perhaps you just make it look au courant with the revisions.

I LOVE those nylons! Where did you get them?
I'm a sucker for grey. They look great with the gold brocade. Beautiful photos.

That's a great idea, I'd never much thought how such simple alterations can update a look. I'll definitely keep this in mind the next time I visit a vintage store!

Oh, H&M for the tights. I'm there this weekend!! :)

Very daring but you are riGht about wearing them in so many different ways when they're shorter. I especially love the jacket. Great for layering & the perfect colour for autumn. I wonder how you paid for them? - eLLy*

You are easily the most stylish blogger I follow. Wish I could dress like you but I don't have the figure! But I still get ideas from you. Even though you are super cute and skinny like a lot of models, you still don't come across like these models on street style blogs in crazy shoes and drapey stick figure clothes. Totally glam with just enough real.

It's just such a great post (I tried to comment on Lucky but they wanted me to register). I read every day and wanted to let you know how much I admire your style, thoughtful posts and grace. Your tips about altering vintage are especially inspiring and helpful. A question: These look lined, so when you hemmed them did you resew the lining by hand? Thanks so much for the wonderful ideas.

The first photo took me by surprise: everything about it, the lighting, color, and the shadow of the twig... it's all perfect! I love it, along with the gold + grey, bright + muted.

You're such an inspiration!

can you just tell me why you get to be seriously gorgeous, innovatively creative, and have great style, too? tell me how that's fair.

the earrings themselves are killing me, dead. the whole thing, you've done me in.

i can't even understand, i'm into fashion, but maintaining a complete working wardrobe that i'm satisfied with for any extended period of time.. takes a lot of work! I'll be pleased for a while, and then somewhere along the line, i'll suddenly have almost literally nothing to wear. it's not that i'm a trend surfer, on the contrary- i like keep generally informed but maintain a more original look, but it's just.. you’re obviously very sartorially inspired, but how do maintain such an innovative, fresh, perspective when it comes to clothing choices?? judging by the quality of your items, you probably have a larger budget than i do these days ;) girl, how big is your closet??

i'm so glad i get to come check out your blog after being bored to tears by homogenous fashion and be blown away to the point of bewilderment and nearly frustration. perhaps the guise of the internet is making me bold (embarrassingly so, thank golly for anonymity), but when i encounter someone who’s generally got it going on, i wonder what’s their deal.. do you have an education in fashion, do you come from money, do you have unbearably elegant parents..?

anyway, your style aesthetic may be intricately layered, but you’ve got that effortless thing down. congrats.

The first photograph is off the hook. Gorgeous. I love what you did. I would have done the same thing. I might have made the dress/jacket a tad longer but not too much. So, for me, your redesign is a HIT.

Dear Glamourai,
Guess what, today I was thrifting with one of my best friends and she was on the fence about an adorable 2 piece outfit just like yours. I used your post as the perfect justification for her to get it, and I told her I'd alter it for her. Needless to say, she skipped away with an adorable outfit, thanks in great part to you. Love the blog!
