yet another lovely thing happened in 2011: bunny (my itty-bitty papillon pup) and i welcomed a little CHICKEN into our lives:

i met chicken when i was away on the LL bean signature shoot in puerto rico. she was one of many, many stray dogs we saw roaming the country during our week-long stay. they were everywhere, in families and packs of all ages and shapes. in an otherwise breathtaking place, the sight of this lent a heart-wrenching undercurrent. even worse, they were all so loving and sweet; i wanted to take at least 100 of them home with me.
what was different about chicken was she was all alone. our crew found her while shooting one day in an especially remote location, on a mostly-untouched part of the island. she looked very ill. there were no other dogs around, no tourists or neighborhood people to slip table scraps to her. and yet she was the sweetest pup of them all.

without a real plan in mind, i simply decided i had to get her off that beach, and one of our local crew members volunteered to drive her to the closest veterinarian. the vet turned out to be an amazing guy, who has personally rescued hundreds of dogs from across puerto rico, and who still texts me weekly (three months later!) to check in on chicken's well-being. he discovered she was much, much sicker than i'd expected. we immediately had to put her into emergency surgery.

two and a half weeks later, her stitches were removed and chicken boarded a cargo flight to new york city (big thanks to dr. castro and william grey for helping me coordinate this complicated operation). picking her up from the airport was such a surreal, joyful experience! but her health problems lingered, and it took another month of treatment before she was properly on her feet. it was so hard to watch her go through it all ~ after she'd already been through so much ~ which is why it's now so indescribably rewarding to see her healthy, and happy in her comfy new life.

as for why i named her chicken? after she'd been whisked off to the local doc, i was chatting about hypothetical names for her with craig, the makeup artist on set. i told him how i had originally planned to name bunny 'little edie' (after edie beale, of grey gardens fame), but that when i met her i just couldn't see her as anything other than a bunny. craig said, "didn't edie used to call everyone she loved 'chicken'?" i'd forgotten that detail from the film, but looking out across that near-empty oceanfront, dotted with wild chickens instead of scorched sunbathers, i knew that had to be her name. and i'm so grateful to have found her.

that is awesome you did that! you have a big heart :) and it's just adorable your pups are named after other animals hehe
This story is amazing! Chicken looks really happy with you. Thank you for caring about pets, specially dogs! They are the most loyal pets and they truly love back.
ahhmazing story!!

That is so, so wonderful! It's incredible that chicken went through all that and is healthy now! And what you did is so inspiring and beautiful! Dogs are so warm, loving and loyal and deserve it all in return. Chicken is beautiful, xo
This is a wonderful story. It breaks my heart every time I see stray animals.
This story fills me with irrepressible glee. I am SO HAPPY that you rescued instead of going to a breeder. I hope everyone thinks of this when they consider purchasing a dog. Instead of encouraging irresponsible breeding with our pocketbooks, we should be opening our homes to the thousands of abandoned and homeless dogs and cats in shelters. Ok, rant over ;)
What a story!!!I love people who rescue and help animals!!!You're amazing!!

Amazing story!! I never comment but I felt compelled to tell you how utterly selfless and kind your actions were....I wish more people had your compassion.
This WARMS my heart soooo much. What a beautiful story and what a beautiful you (and your team). Now, he has got to come out in every photo shoot...he must :-) xoxo
What an amazing story! Thinking of all those homeless animals is so sad. And thinking of solo dogs like Chicken is more heartbreaking. It's wonderful that you were able to find each other, even when you were originally worlds apart!
What a heart-warming story! You are so kind to have rescued that dog! You will surely have his loyalty for ever. I'd love to see more pictures of dogs in your posts, by the way.
How nice of you, that's so sweet and selfless

Bless you! What an amzing thing to do. Are there any quarantine rules coming in to the US? I live in the Uk and have travelled to Thailand, Costa Rica and many other places and there are stray dogs everywhere - the only thing that puts me off these places. We have horrendously long quarantine times for animals in the UK, (6 months unless the animal is microchipped) and I feel that would be just too stressful for an already stressed dog. I'm so glad you've done this!! Love your blog, by the way - been reading for ever, but I'm not much of a commenter - sorry!
So heartwarming what you did for Chicken, I'm so glad for her!

Oh Kelly, I'm so glad you told this story! I love learning these types of things about bloggers, it sheds so much light on your character- clearly you're a wonderful person! I love how the name for Chicken came about, it feels so organic, just the way a name should be for a sweet dog. I hope to meet your beautiful pup one day on the streets of Williamsburg! xoxo

Inspiring story to kick off 2012!!
What a sweet story.
Love the outfit!
I think you pretty much look awesome all the time, even when you're walking your dog. Love the jacket, boots, and t-shirt!
Such a sweetie!
I rescued my doggie too, from the dreaded 'E' list at ACC. He was supposed to be just a foster but wormed his way into my heart. Now I can't imagine being without him. He's called Sherman, since when I got him he was fat as a tank!
He had lots of health problems too, but over time we've managed to sort them all out, mainly thanks to amazing food (Honest Kitchen grain free) and a brilliant vet. Since then we have moved from New York to Belgium, to London (with several Scotland visits and a trip to France). Rescuing a dog was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done!
I hope very much Chicken and Bunny will be in lots of photos to come!

This literally made me cry! I love Pietro Rico. I am half Puerto Rican and a great deal of my family lives there. But those doggies make me so sad. Having adopted two strays here in Colorado, I know the crazy amount of health issues they can face. You did an amazing thing! And then, to bring her all the way to NYC ::swallows lump in throat:: It's a beautiful story for a beautiful family.
Such a good story. I'm glad you rescued Chicken! I've been out of town for a week and I'm missing my pup like mad. I can only imagine how happy Chicken is to have an actual fam.

Every other month, I like to add a new style blogger to my Google Reader. WWD pointed me to you, but this story sealed the deal. I am from Puerto Rico (though I live in NYC), and it breaks my heart to come back home and see all the strays roaming the streets. I once rescued a pup in Cuba, and it was truly a fluke as strays are few and far between there. It is a shame that the situation is not the same in Puerto Rico :-(. It is a personal dream of mine to found a comprehensive animal sanctuary on the island at some point. Anyways, wonderful that this little story made me an immediate fan. Chicken is lovely. Thanks for opening your heart and home to her.
So I hadn't had enough coffee when I opened up blogloving, and I really though you meant an actual chicken. Then when I clicked on your blog it looks like you're holding two leashes and I really hoped it was you walking a dog and a chicken :P Cute pup though, and such a story!
What a beautiful story! Chicken is a lucky pup to have found you! She looks so healthy now! And Bunny has a sweet friend!
xo, sam
"Otherwise breathtaking place?" I live in Puerto Rico, and although it is breathtaking many times and in many places, your shock over the stray dogs shows that you did not get to see the real Puerto Rico at all in your time here. It is a country with very much poverty, which is reflected in the stray animal population, but also in the every day streets, which are teeming with the homeless, the destitute, and the sadly addicted. This country is stunning, but for reasons that go beyond beaches and resorts. I hope that next time you come, you will make an effort to experience the real Puerto Rico, and think about global poverty. If you're surprised about our stray pet population, you will be shocked about the effects of US colonialism on the people - and perhaps you will be moved to think of this island as a colony to be liberated, rather than as a playground or pet shop for people from the US.
Beautiful story! So glad that Chicken has a lovely home :)
