sonia rykiel, spring 2008
last october, the designer sonia rykiel celebrated the 40th anniversary of her eponymous label with a rollicking runway reverie, culminating in a surprise 30-piece finale parade of tribute looks, designed by rykiel's top contemporaries (everyone from jean paul gaultier to ralph laruen to christian lacroix and martin margiela!).

it was a spontaneous style spectacular, and the party's far from over. this month, rizzoli launches a beautiful coffee table book celebrating sonia, who recently shared her '10 rules of style' with elle magazine:
1. know yourself
"what counts is how you look at yourself ~ what you should show and what you should hide. you have to spend time in front of a mirror. very few women pay attention to that."

2. use your head
"my style corresponds to the image i have of the left bank woman who pays attention to what's going on in the streets, in politics, in the world. clothing is also something that happens in your head."

3. remember the power of black
"black is a magnificent color ~ it gives you an outline like a
pencil stroke."
4. add a little sparkle
"i love accessories ~ bags, shoes, brooches, necklaces. i even like to have a crystal comb or a flower in my hair. if you're wearing a little black dress, a sparkling detail adds a simple and pretty touch."
5. have a fail-safe outfit
"it's important to have an outfit that always works for you ~ one that you know looks good when you are in a rush."

6. learn the art of packing *
"i always travel with lots of long jackets, in black, brown, or navy blue, and matching trousers. then i mix and match the jackets and the trousers."
7. let your feet do the talking
"i love eccentric, quirky shoes with colors and very high heels that are gilded or extravagantly embellished with crystals. a pretty foot underlines a look. it's a way of defining a style."
8. dress for yourself
"of course fashion is important, but i think the way you live counts for more. a woman should be herself and dress according

"of course fashion is important, but i think the way you live counts for more. a woman should be herself and dress according
to who she is."
9. seduce with your style
"it's very natural to be sexy, to be seductive ~ it's a way of being. you can do much by paying careful attention to your clothes, by knowing a length or a certain color that suits you."
10. ignore other people's advice
"you shouldn't ask for other people's advice, and certainly not your partner's. it's useless. you need to know yourself ~ that's enough."

sonia rykiel, fall 2008
* though i have my own staunch opinions on the art of packing, i certainly think rykiel's rules give a good, general foundation for building your individual look on.

what a fabulous post!
I always make sure that if I am showing my legs, I am not showing a lot on top, and vice versa
I loved the '10 rules' from Sonia Rykiel when I went through the same mag :) LOVE those gorgeous jackets in the 1st pic!
My fashion 'mantra' - have fun with it! Which is why I love your style & blog, as you surely know how it's done ;)
xx
Have always loved Sonia! I saw her unmistakable flame-red bob last time I was in Paris.
sonia is very very wise and a unadulterated living fashion legend; its refreshing to see someone who ruly knows themselves and showcases it without a care in the world
great post love

BESTTTTTTTTT post
Okay, I was doing fine up to point 10, which was "ignore other people's advice".
Now, Sonia Rykiel is another person, and all those 10 points fall into the category of 'advice'.
So I'm really in a bind... the only way I can take her advice is to not take her advice, leading to an irreconcilable contradiction.
Damn - I just came here to look at the pretty pictures, now I'm not sure whether the dialectic method has any validity in a postmodern environment.
She did some fantastic tights a while back though...
My favorite piece of fashion advice is my own. Only buy what you love. Never purchase a piece of clothing that you don't HAVE to have. This way, no matter what you pull out of your closet, you are going to love it and feel great in it. That's how to get a killer wardrobe, by filling it with amazing pieces, and less filler.

best fashion advice? "own what you wear." The wackiest, silliest, most extreme outfits are the most fun to wear, but if you're not confident about any over-the-top (or understated, whatever floats your boat) outfit, it won't look nearly as good on you.
Oh, P.S. I featured your latest entry in my blog, check it out!

The Best defined approach to individualism, fashion and style. Great philosophy!!
wonderful post!!
great post!
lol @ Too Many Tights... you are so right!
Really great rules, I've to remember them. From now on I don't care any more what other people say.
to: too many tights,
These are Rykiel's personal style rules, not advice, by stating number 10 she's only encouraging you to make and live by your own rules, but I don't think she'd mind if you agreed with some or all of her rules.
I thought the article was Fabulous though.
the rykiel margiela wig coat is amazing!!!! even better than the now classic blond one!

oh- she's full of sass isn't she?
I love her rules, I do not have a fail safe outfit, need to get on that. Best advise, I don't know if I've ever really been given any..... that I appreciated. lol

wow, this is ironic. i just went to exhibit 'a photographic legacy of andy warhol' a couple weeks ago and saw this sonia rykiel photo in person. his point of view is truly fascinating. My favorite are his Polacolor 2 of Irma Mann.
I love this posting and I really enjoy your blog! Sonia is a legend and I admire her for her freedom and spirit. She is lovely! I enjoy reading your blog often. Keep up the good work darling!
